Foods that Aggravate Arthritis
Arthritis is a medical condition that refers to inflammation of the joints. The symptoms involve pain, swelling, and stiffness of muscles surrounding one or more affected joints. Types of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis, with the most common being osteoarthritis. The type of diet, environmental factors, and lifestyle of an individual may trigger the join pains. Inflammatory foods are not recommended for patients who have arthritis.
The list below includes foods that are not advisable for persons with arthritis:
1. AGE foods
These are foods with advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are gilled, pasteurized, grilled, or heated. The breakdown of these foods in the body uses cytokines and produces inflammatory messengers. The inflammatory messengers cause joint inflammations or lower the risk of reducing existing inflammation.
2. Sugars and refined carbohydrates
Feeding on a diet containing sugars and refined carbohydrates is dangerous for arthritis. These foods cause an increase in AGEs, which facilitates the production of inflammatory messengers. Foods with high sugars include white rice. Avoiding foods with high sugars also includes high-sugar fruit juices, which causes microglial activation and central sensitization.
3. Dairy products
The type of protein contained in some dairy products may irritate tissues surrounding the joints. Patients with arthritis are advised to have a vegan diet. Full-fat cheese is something to keep out of the food as it contains saturated fats, which are inflammatory triggers.
4. Salt and preservatives
Most of the foods in the market contain high amounts of salt and preservatives to increase shelf life. The consumption of high amounts of salts and chemicals in foods results in joint inflammation. A careful reading of the products’ description is advised.
5. Corn oil
When cooking food, oil is essential for taste, satiety, and the addition of oils to the body. Some fat, such as corn oil, contains high amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, which are inflammation triggers. Seeking alternative foods with low prices of omega-6 fatty acids is recommended.
6. Alcohol and tobacco
Drug abuse puts one at a high risk of contracting or developing many health problems. Tobacco use puts one at the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, fx, while its continued use with arthritis is not any safer. On the other hand, alcohol consumption may lead to gout and increased joint pains.
7. Ice cream
Considered a delicacy for most people, ice cream is used for dessert or a summer snack. This frozen delicacy is not the food for persons with arthritis since it contains saturated fats and added sugars, which cause inflammations.
8. Sausages
Sausages are processed foods whereby all processed foods contain AGEs and preservatives. Sausages may be delicious to the mouth but lethal in the body.
With all these foods cut from the diet, here are some healthy meals with arthritis. Eating fish and soy are an ideal source of proteins, extra virgin olive oil, low-fat dairy products, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
