DIY Sprays for Ticks and Fleas in Dogs
For any pet owner, fleas and ticks are not good news. Both fleas and tick infestations can make your dog suffer considerably. Even worse, some breeds of dogs have pretty severe flea attacks, which complicate the matter even more. In such situations, it is necessary to use home remedies to get rid of fleas and ticks in dogs. This is because most conventional flea and tick products in the market contain chemical pesticides that are harmful to the pooch. So, here are a few homemade spray ideas along with the instruction on how to make them at home.
Flea Free Essential Oil Blend
To prepare this spray, you need a base oil such as sweet almond or hazelnut, a few drops of clary sage essential oil, citronella essential oil, peppermint essential oil and lemon essential oil. Once you have got together all these ingredients, preparing the spray is a matter of a few minutes. All you need to do is blend these oils and store the mixture in a dark glass dropper bottle. Apply two to four drops of this spray topically to the neck, chest, legs, and base of the tail of your dog. Add a few drops to a bandana or cotton collar too if your dog gets frequent flea attacks.
Flea Free Spritz
To make about 8 ounces of this spray, you need 1 tsp of vegetable glycerin, ½ ounce of grain alcohol or vodka, 1 tsp of sulfated castor oil, 10 drops of grapefruit seed extract, 7 ounce of distilled or spring water, 4 drops of clary sage essential oil, 1 drop citronella essential oil, 7 drops peppermint essential oil and lastly, 3 drops of lemon essential oil. Blend all these together and shake well before use. The spritz form makes it easy for you to apply the repellant on your dog. Hence, this is one of the most popular and preferred home remedies to get rid of fleas and ticks in dogs.
Goodbye Tick Spritz
Much like its name, the Goodbye Tick Spritz can be really effective. To prepare this, you need vegetable glycerin, vodka, sulfated castor oil grapefruit seed extract, distilled or spring water, geranium essential oil, rosewood essential oil, lavender essential oil, bay leaf essential oil, myrrh essential oil and opoponax essential oil. The last three ingredients are what makes this one different from the other sprays. This one too needs to be stored in a dark or opaque bottle. Spray or apply this on your dog using your hands especially before you take him out for a walk in wooded areas or amidst long grasses. It is advisable not to prepare more than 8 ounces of these sprays in one go.
With these home remedies to get rid of fleas and ticks in dogs, you can be assured that your dog will be protected against these pests without any potential side-effects.
